Alicia Hersey, MD (She/Her)
Biography
Why did you choose WIH/Brown OB/GYN?
I instantly felt “at home” here at Brown. I am from Rhode Island and was a medical student here as well, so it has already been an incredible experience taking care of individuals from my own community. I was fortunate enough to gain exposure to the residency prior to applying, and it really feels like one big family. Everyone, from the Department Chair and Program Director, to your co-residents, supports and looks after one another. Brown has really unique opportunities to work with midwives and train in the emergency department at Women and Infants. Working with the upper level residents during medical school, it was clear that this was a place to get really strong training with a great sense of support and community.
What are your interests within OB/GYN?
I have a lot of different interests, which is why I love the diversity of OB/GYN! I really enjoy family planning, gynecologic surgery, and adolescent care.
What is your favorite thing to do in Providence and/or Rhode Island?
All the outdoor things you can do year-round! I love going to the beaches and taking advantage of the many different bike paths throughout the state in the spring/summer and apple-picking and leaf-peeping in the fall. It’s awesome to be so close to the mountains in the winter too. You also can’t beat the food scene in Providence – I live outside of Providence and can always try a new place downtown when I get a chance!
Where do you live?
I live in Coventry, RI, which is about 20 mins south of Providence on the way to the beaches!
One fun fact about you:
My softball team won the national slow-pitch softball title in Georgia in 2007
One piece of advice for candidates:
You will likely hear a lot of similar things about programs on the interview trail – lots of places are going to offer amazing training with similar rotations/structures. Try to focus on what stands out about programs (good or bad), and your gut feelings during and immediately after the interview. You’ve made it this far, so interviews are really about finding the best fit for you!
