One piece of advice for candidates:
Do an away rotation! It is a great opportunity to meet residents, feel the culture of the program, learn a ton, and show your skills. Reflect on your personal and professional values and find residency programs that hold the same values; if you do, you'll find yourself surrounded by people that motivate and support you!
