Jen Coates, MD (She/Her)
Biography
Why did you choose WIH/Brown OB/GYN?
Brown provides the perfect combination of high-volume training and a breadth of subspecialty exposure. I was thrilled to be able to train at an all OB/GYN hospital, learning from providers who are leaders in their fields and fierce patient advocates. I was looking for a program that emphasized health equity, reproductive justice, and advocacy. Brown does just that. In addition to everything that seemed great about the program on paper, I was blown away by the community that I witnessed during my interview day. It was clear how much the residents and attendings cared for one another. I knew that matching at Brown meant I would feel truly supported throughout my residency and that the people I worked with would care about me as a person, not just as a resident.
What are your interests within OB/GYN?
I am interested in generalist OB/GYN practice and caring for underserved patients and patients with substance use disorders. I hope to help address social determinants of health within my practice.
What is your favorite thing to do in Providence and/or Rhode Island?
So far I have loved getting to know my co-residents, and I'm looking forward to spending a ton of time with this amazing crew over the next 4 years! In particular, I've enjoyed going to the beaches, jogging around my quiet neighborhood, and exploring the food scene in Rhode Island. There are so many amazing restaurants that I can't wait to try!

One piece of advice for candidates:
Find a program where you feel truly supported to pursue your interests in OB/GYN and outside of it. You are more than just a resident, and you should find a program that values you as such! If you see people you admire professionally and personally at a program, that's a great sign that it could be a great place for you!
